I actually qualified.

Holy crap. We qualified for a social program. School lunches.

I've never ever qualified for anything free or discounted. We always were over the limit in our salary, even when we were broke as hell. WIC? Nah-uh. Help with daycare? No way. Sliding scale for gymnastics? Nope. But with me being out of a job, it changes things a lot.

Don't get me wrong, my husband still makes decent salary. And we probably still don't qualify for anything I already mentioned. But for Ella's school lunches, they go off of what we made in the last 30 days. I got paid my severance pay on July 24th, so on August 25th, I put in the application. I was officially and truthfully able to checkmark "no income" next to my name.

Today we got the approval for FREE school lunch. Not even the 40 cent reduced lunch fee. We got it FREE. I'm beyond excited. I was paying $1.95/day or making her lunch. I was hoping we'd qualify for the 40 cent lunch. But free? Yay! Sure, it's not that huge of a deal, but saving $42.25/month adds up.

Of course, as soon as my unemployment kicks in, I'll have to call and adjust my income, but I'm going to use it until the very last moment!

Congrats! Anything with the word FREE in it is awesome! You mentioned Tom made good salary and it just made me curious- what does he do again?

Glad you are getting some help. We qualify for reduced lunches and, with 2 kids in school, it is a HUGE help.

I didn't qualify, or even try, for the free lunch program until after Dirty lost his job. Now both the kids get free lunches. That saved my ASS last year and will save it again this year. It's not much, but hell ever little bit counts when we're pinching pennies. Glad you were able to get something for FREE!

That's how I felt when we qualified for WIC. After actually being broke enough in the eyes of the state of Idaho we qualified. And it has helped!

And geez! What happened to .50 school lunches?

It's like another tax refund!

I'm both embarrassed and relieved to be getting help with my kids' medical coverage and food stamps. The stigma still haunts me, but the need to put food on the table and a roof over our heads helps me through it.

I am actually grateful I had to take unpaid leave for the last 5 weeks of maternity leave as it put us in the same position for WIC & her healthcare. Without that I honestly don't know how we would have done it some of these months!

Every little bit helps & like you said- $43 a month is nothing to sneeze at!

I got free lunch in high school and it was the only free thing I've ever qualified for to this day. No WIC or daycare assistance for us either!

Hmph. Maybe you can use that money to pay for your burlesque class.
