When I was in the hospital bored out of my mind, I was flipping channels and saw something that surprised me.
On the "newborn channel" (which, I may add, scares the shit out of me. They were going over the most basic of baby care. If you are IN the hospital after having a baby and you don't know most of these things, you are going to be in trouble) they put up a little blurb about formula. They said to ~only~ get premixed formula, as the powdered formula wasn't made at a high enough temperature to be sterile.
Really? How can powdered formula not be safe?

Really? And how many people who formula feed can afford the premixed stuff? I bet WIC doesn't cover it.
That channel sounds almost as bad as the "discharge class" my ghetto hospital requires. ~eyeroll~
Most kids on formula are on powdered. My son is. The premixed stuff is even more expensive than the already expensive powdered crap. Our Pedi told us to go for the powdered.
That has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard!
I hate the pre mixed formula. We got it once while traveling for Aidan and he puked it all up every single time.
all 3 of my mostly-powdered formula-fed children are perfectly healthy! such silliness!
Hmm, with all the regulations now, if it wasn't safe, while would they sell it?. Never heard this beofre, btw. I mostly BF, but when I used formual, we used the powdered kind as well. Never any issues/problems, either.
I dunno Nancy?? Maybe this is new theory they have since Chinas outbreak w/the bad formula that killed all those babies??
Hmmmmm.......I haven't heard that. I no nothing about formula though. I gave the "Breastfeeding Support Kit" (insert sarcasm) that I received in the mail to my neighbor. It just happened to be the kind she used, and I had 2 giant cans, plus a mini!
I had never heard that either. Whats even sillier is that Memorial (I am assumng thats where you saw this) give out powered formula!
Yup, it was Memorial Meredith. I don't use formula, but still - I thought it was nutso.
I avoided the Newborn channel like the plague. Guess I just didn't want to admit that we could have newborns anytime soon.
I know that things change constantly, but could they really sell powdered formula if it wasn't safe? Sure, they sell padded bumpers for cribs and other things that some don't consider safe, but I would think when it comes to a food product, it should be okay.
I've never heard that. And the "newborn channel"???
That is crazy! Mine were both BF and formula fed.. and formula is expensive, but the pre-mixed stuff is crazy expensive.
I'm guessing that the Newborn Channel is perhaps sponsored by a formula company, in which case they want viewers to buy their most expensive product.
Yeah, I'm cynical.
